What is the workshop about?

The workshop sheds light onto how theater costume designers/stylists find different ways to make the characters shine with their costume designs for different scenes in a play.
It will explore how costumes influence the actors’ behavior, how they slip into their character and vice versa; how actors start to feel the mood they are playing and what games they are proposing for the play itself. The merging of these approaches usually helps the audience find the right hints about the characters.

What is the approach

Reading a scene from a script and finding the hints regarding the costumes whether psychologically or written that helps us find the looks for them. Discussing the influences we get from the environment or the director’s style and/or by the actor/actress playing them and incorporate characteristics from real life into fashion to create a unique style for each character we read.

what is the objective of the workshop

The objective of this workshop is simply to give hints on how finding the right costumes makes the characters shine and also how proposing different costumes approaches to one character help the actor/actress playing it adopt the style and dress codes of these characters once proposed by the stylists to make the best out of it in the scenes they are playing throughout the play.

About Bshara Atallah

Being a graduate of the acting and directing school at the L.U. in 2000 and a big lover of textiles, fashion, style, colors and creation has led me to read the characters in scripts with a more concrete way of seeing them in their actual dress codes. I started costume creation and styling way before being at the art school, I even went door to door selling fashion to women at the early age of 19. Now more than 22 years later and more than 10,000 collected unique vintage pieces of clothing I find myself giving advice, styling and renting my vintage collection to many stylists or artists working in the visual industry, films, clips, photography and mostly theater. I am here to share my expertise with those interested in knowing more about it.
