ABOUT

The Summer 2024 Program offers a series of theater and performance workshops conducted by renowned practitioners from Lebanon and the world who share their experiences, working methods, and perspectives within their own practice. The school includes workshops in Acting, Directing, Dance, Improvisation, Light Design, among many others. For 2024, a total of 16 workshops will be offered within a span of five weeks.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Theater and performance arts students in their last years of study, fresh graduates, and young professional practitioners are the main targeted group. Individuals who have been around the theater and performance arts field and would like to be exposed to different perspectives in the arts. The school opened its doors to any participants who have less prior experience in theater but quite interested in the subject matter. Emerging artists residing in Lebanon, and Egypt are welcome to apply.
If you are an emerging artist from any other Arab country and would like to apply, you are welcome to apply.

With the support of the Spanish Embassy in Lebanon and Fonds de soutien aux arts arabes , the Beirut Summer School for theater and performance was be able to offer three scholarships for emerging artist from Egypt to join the school's program for summer 2024.

PALESTINE IN THE BEIRUT SUMMER SCHOOL

We in the Beirut Summer School are aware of what is happening around us. Being engaged in our program does not distract us. In fact we consider it an act of defiance against the harsh realities that we are all living in. We know for a fact that our fates are intertwined and our salvation will only be for all of us together. At the end of some of the workshops an open studio would commence where participants share what they were experiencing within the workshop with the public. The school will also organize seminars where guest speakers are invited to share there experiences and practice with the participants and the public.

DISCUSSION SESSIONS
WITH KHALIL HAJ ALI

Every Sunday during the summer school, Khalil Haj Ali moderates a discussion session around various topics related to theater. The upcoming sessions with participants zoom-in on the pressing issues faced by theater practitioners in Beirut. We'll be delving into these challenges to explore fresh ways of approaching artistic production in theater, moving away from the usual methods. Additionally, participants will be looking at how certain plays or performances have impacted audiences, which should spark creativity and imagination among participants.

MOVEO IN LEBANON
ACTION AND INTENTIOMN IN PHYSICAL THEATER - WITH SOPHIE KASSER

With the support of the Spanish Embassy in Lebanon the Beirut Summer School is proud to announce that it would host the renowned Spanish dance company and school MOVEO who will conduct a two levels workshop with the participants of the Beirut Summer School and the dance community in Lebanon. The workshop titled "Action and Intention in Physical Theater". The workshop focuses on the relationship between bodies and between people in the group. - Verb and action Exploration of theatrical concepts and implementation of the notion of verb to generate a non illustrative action. - Use of the weight as a dialog item Use of the relationship with gravity, opposition or complicity of weight in the dialogue in the relationship with the other.

This workshop will be of three parts:
- Part One (12 hours): Includes the BSS participants and participants from the dance community in Lebanon.

- Part Two (13 hours): The participants from the dance community in Lebanon continue with an additional 13 hours of advanced training.

- Part Three: A presentation to the public in an open studio form.

The school starts on 10 June and ends on 14 July 2024.
Workshop Times in general are:

Monday till Friday: 18:00 till 21:00
Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 till 19:30

THE FEES

This school is free of charge. Participants are not asked to pay any fee. You are only asked to always come on time and not skip any workshop. If you are a participant from any Arab country other than Egypt please note that the costs of Travel, accommodation, and living in Beirut could reach up to 2300$.

Three participant from Egypt will receive a full scholarship that covers their stay.
One participant from Tunisia will receive a partial scholarship covering their accommodation and flight cost.
